I am a recent graduate from Surrey, studying a Bachelor of Science in Criminology, I focused my studies on researching how countries would implement new and unconventional ideas to creative the best environment for their communities, I want to bring this to my role. I loved my experience across all three years, and I want to be able to give back to the current and future community so they can love it as much (or even more) than I did. Fun should be free and accessible to all students!
The cost of living has affected all, but none more than our young people studying their passions. my aim is to ensure that all students can have a fun, fulfilling and healthy experience during their time at Surrey. Whether this be free and cheap events, ensuring that the services on campus are affordable to all. We have hosted a series of free and low cost events, as well as launching our 'Belonging Breakfast', which allows students who may not have the means to have breakfast the chance to start their day right, at no cost to themselves.
This year I pushed for the University to extend the opening hours of Hillside Food Court, which had been reduced from previous years. Now, instead of closing at 2:30pm, it is now open until 8pm, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner. This is a massive win, as it allows students greater access to warm, healthy and more affordable food options all day. Because not everyone wants to eat a meal deal for dinner when they're in a pinch!
In collaboration with the Support Zone, we have greatly expanded our housing events. Including hosting follow up events to our housing fairs, such as our 'Housemate House Party' to help students find people to live with as well as helping them to find the place to live.
This year we have developed our already existing food deals at MPS, they are now more in line with the variety of events we host throughout the week. For instance, our highest attended night is on a Thursday during our Pub Quiz, we have introduced deals on Pitchers and Sharing platters so that student's can order once and be satisfied for longer.
Volunteering and involvement in the wider community is an amazing way of building connections and strengthening relationships whilst helping out. it looks great on CVS’s and allows the students to give back not only to themselves, but the surrounding areas too. I want to bring back the emphasis we once had on volunteer work and encourage everyone to take part.
We are hosting a variety of low-commitment volunteering events, where you can get involved without the worry of having to stay consistent during busy times of your studies. These include, our community litter picks in Guildford town centre, to help have a positive impact on our local area, whilst increasing the overall perception that Guildford population has of the University and its students.
Although we are fortunate to be able to call such a safe area our home, there are always additional measures that can be made not only to increase the statistics surrounding safety and crime, but also just the sense of comfort we feel when out and about. whether this be additional lighting and CCTV on key pathways when people are walking home late at night or alone or just ensuring that these routes are accessible and maintained.
This project is currently in the works, in collaboration with Campus Safety and The Centre for Wellbeing, to help deliver a safe space on campus that can be accessed at any time it is needed. With an integrated video calling system that can be used to contact 24/7 mental health counselling as well as self soothing and regulating items to allow you to decrease any stresses or anxieties you may be experiencing.
The Campus Path safe route has been worked on and is soon to be launched on Stag Hill campus, this will be a route through the main campus that is there to help you feel safer. It has increased lighting and CCTV as well as intercoms that link directly to Campus Safety. In combination with following along the road that cuts through campus, it means that if you are in need of Campus Safety's services, they will be able to get to you as soon as possible via car.
I have had multiple walk arounds campus with University staff to point out the areas that I believe to be hazardous, whether this is manhole covers that I have seen multiple students slip on, cracks in the pavement from tree roots, or the tactile slabs near roads that no longer serve the accessible purpose for those with visual impairments as they are trip hazards. These conversations will hopefully lead to change in the near future.
